The journey of self-improvement is not easy at all.
If you’re like me, then you will likely have stopped and started many, many times.
Maybe you’re discouraged or perhaps distracted. Maybe it just isn’t the right time. Whatever the reason, you’ve come to a halt and now you don’t know what to do.
The question you may be asking yourself is: should I start over or just quit?
Well, in this short post, I’m going to tell you why I think that neither option is desirable and present you with an alternative.
Should I Start Over?
I’ve had this thought over and over again during the last few years of my life. Every time I hit a roadblock or failed at something, I think that I should just start over.
What a colossal waste of your precious time? And it’s not just a waste of your time in the present and future, it’s also a waste of the time you’ve already invested.
If you’ve missed a week of workouts, don’t start your entire program over again just for a sense of continuity. When you miss a day of meditation, it’s not the end of the world. When you’re trying to build a new habit and you fail one day, it doesn’t mean you have to start from Day 1.
If you were driving to work and took a wrong turn, you wouldn’t go back home and start from the beginning, so why would you want to start over now?
Should I Quit?
If what you are doing is worthwhile, then there is no way that you should be quitting it.
Let’s say you’re trying to get your university degree and you fail an assignment, should you just quit the whole course? Absolutely not!
You’ll have wasted all of that invested time and money.
Now, that’s not to say that quitting doesn’t have its place. When a goal is not serving you any more, then you should just cut it off. Otherwise, you’re just wasting even more time.
But, if it’s worth it, you should never, ever quit!
So What Should You Do?
Pick up where you left off and try again.
I was always taught that if you make a mistake e.g. when playing an instrument, you should just carry on. You’ll learn more that way than if you had just started the piece from the beginning again.
Sometimes you’ll need to take a pause. But if you’ve just screwed up your form on one rep of your weightlifting program, don’t start the entire set from the beginning. You’re just wasting your time that way.
It doesn’t matter how many times you stumble or fall. Keep picking yourself back up and go for it again!
As always, be patient. Find a sense of love and compassion that you can direct towards yourself and you will find your life becoming much easier.
If you ever begin to ask yourself “should I start over?” or “should I just quit?” then you know that the time has come to make a decision.
So, stay strong. Pick up where you left off and start building that momentum again.
