No matter how positively I thought, I wasn’t getting the results that I wanted. Money was not falling from the sky, despite my daily visualizations and affirmations. The girls were not being magically attracted to me in spite of my “attunement” to “positive vibrations”.
Most importantly, I wasn’t happy. I was tricking – maybe even deluding – myself.
I was policing my thoughts, having no idea how negatively this was affecting my life until it hit me.
And it hit me hard!
One day, I was a positive force in the “universe”. I was telling myself that I was receiving everything in abundance and I was attracting my dreams into my life. The next day, I was a wreck.
Visualizations, affirmations and meditations were suddenly nothing. All of the currency I thought I had built up with the “universe” was suddenly gone.
When you resist or ignore thoughts, they don’t go away, they just wait. It happens to everyone. If you keep resisting your thoughts, they will just keep compounding until the inevitable explosion.
Positive thinking was a bust. Negative thinking was just as bad.
I was absolutely lost. I didn’t know if I should just let myself wallow in depressing negative thinking or risk diving into the active volcano that is positive thinking.
Thankfully, there was a third choice and one I want to share with you today.
It’s called having a “positive mental attitude”.
What Is A Positive Mental Attitude?
After all, I just ripped into positive thinking. I even said that it ruined my life. How could I then tout the benefits of a “positive mental attitude”? Aren’t they just the same thing.
The answer: no – not even close.
To me, having a positive mental attitude consists of the 3 P’s:
One of the main problems with positive thinking is that it forces you to deny that bad things can happen to you. Unfortunately, bad things happen to all of us. Some of them we can’t help, but most of them we can plan for and avoid.
One of the hardest things to do is sit down and think about exactly what could go wrong. It’s hardly a fun thing to do and it’s not even remotely motivating.
To illustrate this, let’s look at money.
Planning ahead for money might be realizing that there is a possibility of an unexpectedly huge expense occurring this month. The car could break down, the boiler could explode, the roof could leak and so on.
Whilst it’s certainly not good to dwell on all the bad things that could happen. If you do, you might just find yourself living an incredibly anxious life, always waiting for the next handful of crap to hit the fan.
However, setting aside some time to consciously plan what could go wrong might just save you big time in the long term. That brings you to the next step.
Now that you’ve gotten the “negative” side of things out of the way, you can prepare for the worst case scenario.
Following on from the example, financial preparedness might be making sure you have a surplus of money in your savings. Also, you could mitigate other potential financial losses such as taking the car for regular checks and fixing small issues before they become bigger ones.
Luck is when preparedness meets opportunity. So, when you plan in advance and prepare for the worst case, you are far more likely to have an eventually positive outcome.
As they say in the SAS:
“Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance”.
So, you’ve planned for the worst and prepared for it too. Only one thing is left…
Now you have the luxury of having positive thoughts – after all, that’s exactly what they are: a luxury.
You’ve done all that you can to prepare for the worst case. All you can do now is not dwell on what could go wrong. Now you get to hope for the best.
What To Do When You Can’t Plan Ahead
Some things you simply can’t plan for. For example, a loved one unexpectedly dying can’t be planned for. Being prepared for this means working towards having a positive and rewarding relationship with them. It means never leaving things unsaid or leaving a conversation with unresolved anger or tension.
Sometimes being prepared means not taking the simplest things for granted. It might mean approaching life with an attitude of love, gratitude and forgiveness.
Be prepared and kick life’s ass as often as you can.
Most importantly though, don’t take life, love or your relationships for granted. Never leave anything unsaid and be honest with yourself and your loved ones.
